The rotor excitation coil in an automotive alternator is the core component that enables the alternator to generate electricity continuously. Its primary function is to generate a magnetic field by conducting electricity; in conjunction with the rotor’s rotational motion, this field cuts through the magnetic flux lines in the stator coils, thereby inducing a current.




• Generating the core magnetic field: The excitation coil is essentially an electromagnet. When current flows through the coil, it magnetizes the two rotor pole shoes surrounding it, creating a powerful magnetic field with alternating north and south poles—a prerequisite for the generator to produce electricity.


• Driven by Direct Current: The two ends of the coil are connected to two slip rings on the rotor shaft, respectively. Externally, carbon brushes make contact with the slip rings, thereby feeding direct current from the battery or the generator itself into the high-speed rotating coil.


• Dynamically controlled by a regulator: Since the speed of an automotive engine fluctuates, the current in the field coil is controlled in real time by a voltage regulator to ensure the alternator consistently outputs a stable voltage (typically around 14 V). The field current is reduced at high speeds and increased at low speeds.


• High mechanical strength and compact design: The coil is typically wound on a frame using pure copper wire coated with high-strength insulating varnish and is tightly clamped between two steel pole shoes. Since the alternator can reach maximum speeds of tens of thousands of revolutions per minute, the coil must undergo rigorous vacuum impregnation and drying processes to withstand extreme centrifugal forces and prevent the coil from coming loose.


• Excellent high-temperature resistance: The generator is installed in the engine compartment, where ambient temperatures are already high; combined with the heat generated by the current flowing through the coils, the operating environment is extremely harsh. Therefore, the enameled wire and insulation materials of the excitation coils must possess excellent high-temperature resistance and aging resistance to prevent short circuits and burnout.
